I know you're going to say it depends on the child, but please post any experience you've had!
My son has to share his room with our huge computer desk and right now he sleeps (sometimes) in his crib that is converted into a toddler bed. I am thinking of getting a loft so he has more play space.
IKEA has a cute one for $150. There's a local store that has one with a slide, but then he'd never stay in bed!!

All I can tell you is that consumer groups and CPSC recommend no child under 6 years old even be allowed on a loft or top bunk, let alone sleep in one regularly.
