I know that:
* we're all in galus and
* the presence of darkness allows us to the see the light so much more
* the greatness of light that evolves davka from darkness
* Hashem is disciplining us from love
BUT, as a mother myself - I also know that such cruel punishments such as those categorized by us as child abuse would never be called "discipline" by any truly loving and knowledgeable parent !! and what loving parent would give their child supernatural strength just to be able to survive the cruelties of the holocaust? why make such a thing in the 1st place?!!

Grin, I have these same thoughts myself. Especially after world events are sad for the Jewish people.

Grin, I don't think there's any answer that we humans can provide. I don't think we're supposed to have an answer, and IMO answers to questions like these are often just an excuse for inaction (eg, if someone can dismiss starving orphans in Ethiopia as "Hashem's punishment for...." they won't feel bad about doing nothing).
I would be wary of describing intense suffering as "discipline out of love." I'm not sure it should be described as "discipline" at all given that we have no idea what's going on "behind the scenes" so to speak.
I don't think we need the darkness to appreciate the light -- if we did, what will be with people born in the times of mashiach/whenever it is that suffering is supposed to disappear, would they not be appreciative?

I like the analogy of a tapestry, where we can only see the knots on the back.
Looking for reason or sense or fairness is limited when we have limited vision.
