Also, people say their kids wouldn’t touch the healthier stuff. Which isn’t at all surprising, processed food is truly addictive and on a very physiological and neurological level makes Whole Foods seem unappealing. |
Not true. My kids would never eat some of the stuff and they are underweight. To the point that we were sent to specialists...

It is not the government who dictates the menu. Find out from your distribution center who the kosher caterer is. Call them and complain.

We are in Monsey and were on 2 different food programs. Same story with each: white bread, juice, deli meat etc. If there is a more nutritious program here please let me know, but I think there are only 3 caterers total providing lunches in Monsey.

And when they were giving out whole wheat rolls, hummus, grape tomatoes, yogurt and an apple, there were constant complaints that the kids wouldn't touch it.
You can't win.

Honestly I know we live in a free country and anyone can say whatever they want, but I just don't get why someone would start a thread complaining about free food. Especially when they can easily go to another place and get free healthier food.

Yup. All that good healthy food was thrown out. Literally. Every day. None of the kids touched it.

Where I am they're mostly giving out good things, and there's fresh fruits and veggies included, but my big peeve is chocolate milk. They gave me 2 gallons of chocolate milk, like whaaaaat??? Who the heck needs chocolate milk in their life, let alone 2 gallons of it?!

She didn't really. Sure, they cut back on the sugar content somewhat for the fruit juice and ice cream. But it's still overly processed tater tot and chicken nugget type food. Oh, yes, some more veggies which either the kids don't take, or throw out. I've never seen a kid actually eat the string beans or carrots or whatever. And due to worries about the kids not getting calcium because very few were drinking the milk, they started allowing chocolate milk back again. (I work in a ps.) Sandwiches are on white bread rolls. The cheapy processed type.

I'm just telling you the reality.
BTW, I've had the sugar free juice (it has an o-u). It tastes so bad. The kids don't drink it, either.

The problem was it wasn't "good." Healthful, maybe.
Our schools do an abysmal job serving decent food.

Most juice you buy (including kedem grape juice) has sweetener added to it. This has none. It is extremely tart, and not in a refreshing grapefruit juice type way. It tastes bad.
