Hi! I have a 16 month old DD that started walking at 12 month and she still keeps on tripping over her own feet. she simply runs ahead of herself and falls. I asked my dr he said shell outgrow it I shouldnt worry, but this is going on my last nerves, I have porcelain floors and she really gets hurt, she knocks herself everywhere all the time... I'm so used to it by now, my mind hears her crying by itself every 5 minutes no joke. shes also used to it and just gives a small cry and I dont even come to pick her up. I have an appt in Manhattan in 4 weeks from now, to a pediatric orthopedic to check her out, but what I heard from people who were there is that hell take an x ray and say come back in a year. I'm starting to think that its not even her walking that makes her fall, I think she just might have a vision kind of problem and doesnt see things in front of her, when she just walks into a cabinet and gets hurt. anybody had a situattion like this? what did you do? please help me?????

1) Get a rug
2) Does she fall when barefoot? Or, just in shoes - if so, go to a good shoe store and get her properly fitted
3)get rugs
4) my ds needed physica therapy because he fell all the time.

I called them up they said I need to go to them, do they just want my money or could they help me?

the first thing I thought of when I read your post was vision.
I think you should take her to an eye doctor.

My son was walking later then that and a that amount of time later yes he trips from time to time but not every 5 minutes like you describe. I'd for sure get her eyes checked if I were you.

to be honest I don't know. I would ask a ped.
Is the ped your doc you mentioned in your OP?
if so and if he brushes you off then call an eye doctor and ask them.
I'm curious about the outcome so keep us updated please.

An eye doctor might be a good avenue as well, but I would try first with an ENT- an otolaryngologyst (however you spell it) who can look in her ears. Something in the inner ear (I forget exactly what) is directly connected to balance- if it's not right, it will affect balance, even in an adult.

yes I did hear of that if there is fluid in the ear it may affect balance, she did have quite a few ear infections when she was young and she does at times have fluid there, but could it be so bad? what is there do do about it?

I think it could get so bad. I have no idea what there is to do about it, but it definitely seems like something to explore. Google it, I'm sure you can find lots of information.

My 19month old trips over his own feet on average every 3 minutes! he has 'pronated feet' - feet pointing outward - so he doesnt have such good balance especially when he runs. However he picks himself up and brushes himself off and runs onward. He might need arches when he's older.

Have your child evaluated by a physical therapist. It sounds like he/ she in addition to falling does not have protective reactions.

The physical therapy evaluator will recommend you see an orthopedist, neurologist, vision specialist etc if she feels there is a need for one. Even if your child is not eligible the therapist will guide you with tips and exercises you can do to help him/ her improve.

I can provide you with the name of a top PT evaluator who is very knowledgable, if you are interested pm me.

my son used to fall a ton. hes now 18 mnths and BH walking much better, not falling that much. heres my advice: 1. physical therapy eval. your daughter may have poor protective extensions, like not putting out an arm to stop a fall, or poor way of walking or poor balance. 2. see an ENT. if the adenoids are enlarged and she has fluid in her ears, her balance could be affected. To fix this issue, if it exists, she would need tubes put in her ears in a very simple quick surgery.

ask the dr. he may or may not think it's a vision problem.

Just want to add that my 4 year old daughter also used to trip and fall ALOT. We got her eyes tested and she needed glasses (-2), which is quite strong for a kid, I think. Now, she falls less, but she is still kind of clumsy. I'd also like to check out the fluid-in-the-ear thing.
