the bottom of my kids white socks are so dirty and really dark grey. It's doesn't clean nicely in the washing machine.
should I bother zouting it (or whatever pre wash you have ), or should I just leave it since no one else sees it anyway?

Absolutely pretreat them. If you don't have time to scrub them, soak them in solution of oxiclean dissolved in boiling water, for a while.

Yes. I do the same. Either zout/shout or nature bright depending on how black its.
