The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended in November 2000 that people stop using over-the-counter medicines containing Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) while it investigated research that indicated the product may increase the risk of stroke in certain women. This information was reported far and wide. As a result of the FDA's recommendation, many drug makers and retailers voluntarily pulled such products from the shelves.

Quote:
The information in this letter was incomplete when it started and outdated now. It didn't include every product that contained Phenylpropanolamine. Some of the products on the list used to contain PPA, but have since been reformulated. Some versions of the list even include medicines that never contained PPA.

The FDA advises against forwarding this chain letter:

FY They didn't say it's not true! and just b/c they advise not too (btw so they won't have all the drug companies on their head) doesn't mean you have to listen Exclamation Exclamation

Re: the link
Quote:
FDA is aware of emails circulating widely that list many products allegedly containing PPA. Those emails are no longer valid and should be ignored. Please read the labels of OTC products to determine if they contain PPA."

I understand this to mean that we should still check medicines to see if they contain PPA! to every lie there is some truth.
who needs that stuff anyway when there is echinacea and sambucol.

well since they are made from plants and flowers and not chemically produced I'd say they were safer!

this is a major missconseption.

Natural gaz kills, but it's all natural

Marihuala & Cocain kill too, all natural

One is not allowed to take Echinacea over 2 weeks, b/c it's dangerous.
And nobody even knows what is the max. safe dose for echinacea.

Freilich u see, this e-mail, dating 5 years ago, gives incomplete info and creates panic.

This is why I asked if you red the entire page.

There is a certain chemical which can be extremely toxic to all people. It can kill in all of its forms. It is a chemical that every one of you uses every day and could not live without. If you measured the level in your body, you would find extremely high levels. It has to be kept in careful balance--if you have too much or too little it can cause great harm or death. It is, of course, natural--found nearly everywhere on earth.

What is this chemical? H2O--WATER!

My point is that everything has its pros and cons. If you define natural as unaltered by mankind, then aloe is great but marijuana is deadly.

Please keep in mind that the "natural" products you buy in stores have also been processed, but there is very little regulation on them--you don't know how pure they are.

Many medications are also herbs, for example, digoxin, a powerful heart medication, is an herbal extract. It has powerful effects and needs to be monitored carefully, but it is quite natural.
