I've heard some new CDs recently, and some of the songs made me want to write a poem about them. I've written a few song-based poems over the summer. I've typed up a couple so far.

This one is based on Avraham Freid's song from his Keep Climbing CD, Kach Es Sheli:

Kach Es Sheli

Somewhere, in a place that we can’t see,
Hashem is building Bais HaMikdash HaSh’lishi.
Bit by bit, drop by drop,
But those aren’t bricks that he’s putting on top.
Hashem is building His home with our tears
That He has collected throughout the years.
After many painstakingly treacherous years,
Many long moments full of sorrow and fears,
The Bais HaMikdash is almost complete.
All it needs is one more tear so sweet.

Hashem, I have a request for You;
You can make my dream come true
If You can make that last tear be mine
To finish Your Bayis after all this time.
We’ve been in this Galus so hard and so long,
So many hardships, so many things wrong.
The only way that I have been coping
Is because I spend my every day hoping
That soon the Bais HaMikdash will finally be built,
Ending this Galus full of sorrow and guilt.
So please, Hashem, when it’s finally time,
Won’t You please let that last tear be mine?

This one is based on Avraham Freid's song Lamah Hashem. For those of you who do not know the song, the words are: Lamah Hashem Ta'amod MaRachok? Why from a distance when I need You close? Why do You hide B'Ais Tzara? Lamah?

A baby eagle is standing on the ground;
Looking for his mother he does cry.
But the mother bird is nowhere to be found,
She’s flying away high up in the sky.

“My beloved mother, please come back to me.
You left me here so helpless and alone.
I’ve never flown before and you can see,
I need you now to come and take me home.
Oh Mommy dear, why did you desert me?
I’m feeling so alone and so forlorn.
Wild animals may come out and hurt me.
My small heart is bleeding and torn.”

“My precious child,” comes the mother bird’s reply,
“I love you more than you can ever dream.
It hurts me so to see you cry,
Please don’t think I’m being mean.
The time has come, my precious son,
For you to spread your wings and fly.
It will take time, but when you’re done,
You will soar up in the sky.”

“But mother dear,” the child cries,
“You’ve always carried me upon your back.
You are my Mommy, so strong and so wise;
If you leave me, my whole world will go black.
I long to be carried by you forever;
I have no need to fly on my own.
By leaving me here, our bond you will sever;
I’ll just stay here miserable and alone.”

“My precious son, my beloved child,”
Calls his mother from high above,
“I’m not leaving you in the hands of the wild;
You don’t know the bounds of my love.
You’ve grown so much and at your size,
To learn to fly it is now time.
Then you’ll have freedom you don’t realize;
You’ll reach your potential, dear child of mine.
If I would listen and carry you always,
I would not be allowing you to reach great heights.
Soon, you’ll see, you’ll be singing my praise,
As together we fly throughout the nights.”

The little bird is the Jewish nation;
We are all children of Hashem.
Our lives are full of suffering and starvation.
We beg Hashem to bring us home again.
But the Ribono Shel Olam knows is it true
That our suffering will make us strong.
We’ll reach great heights and when we do,
We’ll fly back home to where we belong.

This one is based on Lipa's song, "Yeled Katan". The words to the chorus are "Va'ani K'mo Yeled Katan, Omaid V'Shoel Ad Mosai? Ad Mosai, Ad Mosai Ribono Shel Olam? Ribono Shel Olam Ad Mosai?"

I know it needs some fixing up, but that's probably never going to happen, so here it is.

Ad Mosai?

A little boy is lying in bed crying.
He’s just received a beating and was sent to bed.
He’s hungry and he winces in pain
As he recalls all the things his father has said.
His behavior has been disappointing;
He’s had a difficult year.
He sobs and cries out, “Daddy,
Oh Daddy, how long must I stay here?
I so badly need your comfort;
I am hungry and in pain.
Forgive me and I’ll do my best
To never misbehave again.
I need to feel your strong arms
Wrap me in their warm embrace.
I need to feel your loving hands
Caress my tearstained little face.
How long must I stay in here?
I’m punished and I don’t know why.
I’m longing for my beloved father;
Oh Daddy, tell me, Ad Mosai?”

The boy’s cries go unanswered,
But he doesn’t give up hope.
He calls out, “Daddy can I come out?”
But his father answers, “Nope.”
Tears are streaming down the boy’s face;
They’ve soaked his pillow through.
“I’m sorry father, I apologize;
What more am I to do?
Please hold me in your loving arms;
I’m just a little boy!
I didn’t mean to do things wrong;
I only want to bring you joy.
Daddy, oh Daddy, just give me a chance.
I long for your presence with all of my heart.
I’ll try my best to please you
But I don’t know where to start.
As long as I am left here, hungry and alone,
All I can do is cry out in pain.
I yearn for my father to have pity on me
And show me his abundant love again.
I know you are crying inside you
As you hear me plead and cry,
And so I ask you once again,
Oh Daddy dear, Ad Mosai?

Hashem, I am but a small boy,
Longing for Your loving embrace.
I know I’ve been naughty but now I feel bad;
You can see all the tears streaming down my face.
I have nothing to cling to in this difficult time,
Except for my Father High Above.
My heart is bleeding; it’s torn in two;
I’m aching to feel my Father’s love.
Hashem, oh Hashem, I know You feel my pain
As You watch Your precious child cry.
And so I ask You, yet again,
Ribono Shel Olam, Ad Mosai?
