We are currently in the process of buying our first house, and I just started getting cold feet.
It all happened really fast, we arent desperate to leave our apartment, but we were just keeping our eyes open for a house. We went to look at a house, didnt like it, but saw the one next door was available; we checked it out, liked it, put in an offer, settled on a price, and now are working on the mortgage and inspection. And all of a sudden I'm getting nervous....
I love my apartment, but we obviously cannot stay here forever. I do not know if I will feel like we are outgrowing it in 6 months or in 3 years. The house in question is a "starter home" (I.e. not huge), not as good location as we are in now, but its a good price.
My husband noticed how I drew back, and he says although we can back out at any time, its better to do so before we've spent any $$ on it (inspection), which gives me like 2 days. He says we shouldnt do anything if I'm not 100% comfortable with it. He's already spent lots of time and effort trying to work out the finance part.
Who knows if we'll be able to find something once we are desperate? Maybe we'll even find something better?
I know its good to buy when our kids are still small, but I really dont know what to do! If I can be convinced that this is the right move financially, and this is what makes sense, its a great house, etc. then I will get excited about it again.
Someone help me please!

Could you see yourself living there for a minimum of 5 years? Otherwise it is not financially sound to move. After 5 years your mortgage payments eat up more of your principal and you begin building equity.

I think what you are feeling is normal. Put down the pluses and minuses on a sheet of paper (make two columns). That can really help clarify your thinking.

But a home is always a huge, emotional purchase and I don't know of anyone who didn't get cold feet/freak out. I did even when we sold a home and bought a new one!
