My pet peeve is still writing using it's as a possessive. It's = solely and only "it is". Then come affect-effect.

Also annoying is when people copy something over. Just copying it will do. You also don't read things over, just re-read them.

my aunts an english teacher and is forever correcting this mistake-
people always say "besides for"..
it's BESIDES -- you don't need the for

you can say- "the whole family went to the store besides leah"
you shouldn't say "besides for Leah"!

either use "besides" or 'aside from", just not "besides for" or "besides from"...

also, people are always misusing "amount" and "number".

"Amount relates to a quantity of things that are measured in bulk. Number relates to things that can be counted individually

Ex: The amount of space at the convention could not hold the number of people expected to arrive.
Ex: I could not write the number of words needed for my paper because of the amount of time I had to do it in.

And less v. fewer...

fewer when the items are countable, and less in other situations

If fewer people come to the party than expected, the cleaning will take less time.

Hinda Rochel, please don't take this personally. Wordy people (like me) may seem irritatingly perfectionist, but we just like this stuff. Bottom line, language is for communication. While these details insure accurate communication (especially in writing) if you can make yourself understood and you understand others, language is a very forgiving, living and changing entity.

Don't worry Mumoo I was being silly. I don't take it seriously or personally. There is so much more to worry about. I do wish my Hebrew were better though...that's the real issue.

good question, made me have to research

according to Random House's Maven Word of the Day, they are largely interchangeable but added if there is a rule it would be to use insure in financial senses and ensure in others (like mine above)

According to AP style “ensure” that something happens is to make certain that it does, and to “insure” is to issue an insurance policy. ...
