Without a doubt Magna Tiles!!! They are pricey but my grandchildren can literally play for 2 hours straight. A good investment for fun and peace and quiet!!!. My grandon also loves the playmobil ambulance and police van.

magna tiles are great. We had bought the "fake" ones because the real ones were out of stock everywhere. Recently ds got a present of the real ones and I really notice a difference. So if possible, get the real ones.

Another vote for Magnatiles - really expensive, but keeps DS engrossed for hours, and good for creativity and spatial development. He also loves Playmobil, but it doesn't keep him focused for nearly as long, and can actually end up even more expensive than Magnatiles if you have to keep buying more sets and accessories. One other toy not mentioned here is Webby's (aka Kapla - sp?), which my DS actually uses together with Magnatiles.

I'm an early childhood specialist and my vote is for Tegu Blocks. These are brown wooden blocks imbedded with tiny magnets and children can build with them. It is similar to magna tiles but more calming. No harsh colors. All natural wood from Honduras. They come in natural and maple and also now available in pastels.
Google Tegu blocks.
They are awesome!!!
AND
If one gets damaged mail it to them for free replacement or the lifetime of your set.
They are guaranteed for life.
Can't beat that!!!

My grandchildren of that age like mitzvah kinder toys and some of these are "boy" toys. They also like those little metal match box cars and any kind of ball.

I just bought a bunch of little toys for ds for yom tov.
I didn't spend a lot though.
I agree if you are willing to spend, magna tiles is amazing. They play for hours with it.
I bought ds a few puzzles and matching games, he loves those and they are good for most kids.
If your son likes cars, I bought on amazon a great car mat and matchbox cars, they also are time consuming.
Other ideas are
pilo
mega blocks
a mini workbench with tools

My five-yr-old dd plays with Rush Hour for long stretches. She also uses the tiles from the Blokus game to make different arrangements:)
