In so far as any movie is considered appropriate, what movie would you say is appropriate for 14 year old boys?

My son is having some boys sleep over for his 14th birthday, and he wants to watch a movie with them. We have a monitor, but no T.V. and we are pretty strict about what our kids watch. I can't think of anything that he and his friends might like that we would approve of that wouldn't also be considered babyish.

If you could make suggestions I would appreciate it.
No cursing, no romance, and any women must be dressed appropriately. I also don't like him to watch anything violent, although I would allow "fantasy violence," if that makes any sense.

Thanks for all/any suggestions.

Inception is very clean as far as I remember (if there was anything untznius, it passed so quickly that I've since forgotten it), and the violence, in keeping with the dream worlds of the story, is very stylized and not gory.

I loved The Avengers. Again, action/violence but discretion on gore (so lots of explosions, not much blood, know what I mean?), awesome humor. Tony Stark is a playboy character, but he's more toned down in this movie than in his solo Iron Man movies.

My other favorite Marvel movie is Thor (though favorite character is Loki Twisted Evil ). The women are dressed all the time, but Thor takes off his shirt a few times for the ladies to ogle... Wink Romance is pretty chaste -- a kiss at the end. Violence is comic-booky.

At that age I was obsessed with Lord of the Rings. I remember more violence (beheading, people getting shot full of arrows) in that one, but it's still fantasy, with clear good vs. evil.

Appollo 13
October Sky
Pursuit of Happiness
John Q

Just some that I can think of. You can google them and find the website that gives you the lowdown on the whole movie, from what s-xual content to how many times each curse word is said.
Good luck!
I personally love cartoons....Monsters Inc is by far my favorite one out there.

I second the Lord of the Rings or even the Hobbit (I think its out on Video now). The first LOR has the least amount of violence.

OP here. Thanks for the ideas. I actually found a really great website: http://www.imdb.com/ where you can search any movie and then click on a "parent guide" for that movie where it will list every incidence of relations/nudity, profanity, violence, drugs, etc. that is in the movie. It's a great site.

Just to let you know, using your suggestions and that site as a guide we decided on "The Hobbit." My son actually read the book so we thought he'd really enjoy that.

I liked that site too, but since it just rates it on scale, it's not as informative as the other site where it actually tells you, in list form, every single occurrence. Both are very helpful, though.

How about older films?

- To Kill a Mockingbird

- Mr Smith Goes to Washington

- The Gold Rush (Charlie Chaplin)

- 12 Angry Men

- Night of the Hunter (this one really creeped me out...)

Hobbit is only one part of the story. If it does matter.

We once made a list of movies appropriate for my teenage brother in law to watch when he babysits.
I can't find the list but remember two:

Taps
A Few Good Men

You're referring to Oliver! (complete with an exclamation point, honest).

There are several versions of Oliver Twist with no singing.
