The upside is that it's beautiful and relatively care free for a week or 2.
The downside? The smell. The time it takes. The cost. The fact that it's terrible for your natural nails.

I know women who buy glue on nail tips in the local cvs, duane reade or target. I believe they come in different sizes & I was told to be sure to get the nail tips that come pre-glued. It's then a simple matter of taking off the backing & then pressing the tips onto your own nails.

I forgot to mention that I think the cost at the local pharmacies is about $6.

if it's for a special event I would go for the gel manicure ... however, keep in mind that your nails need air to breath & doing the tips can cause fungus which is never any good for anybody ...

I wouldn't get a very long tip jist a bit to lengthen (nails r short just went to mikvah and wedding is mon. Nite)
Why wud u do gel rather?

I hear people like the way gel holds up ...
it doesn't matter how short or long the tip is ... they attache the tip to your nail and hence creates an air barrier ...
so long as you are not always doing this it wouldn't matter in the long run
