We have bh outgrown our current apt and plan to move to a bigger place when our lease is up in 6 months. Is it too early to start looking?

It depends where you live. If you live in Manhattan, where everything is done through a broker, for example, it would be way too early. If you live in a community where everything is word of mouth, its never too early to start putting feelers out there and letter people know you are looking.

Argh. I'm in NYC (not Manhattan)- here it's done both ways. Some through brokers, some through word of mouth. We have not yet decided which it's gonna be.

It can't hurt to start looking around for what's out there. Maybe you'll even find something that would work, in which case maybe you could sublet your current place for the duration of your lease. It never hurts to look.
