Shoot.
I always say it.
"Oh, shoot"
DD, an adult, says it is.
Because it's meant to replace the other sh word.
Asked me to stop using fowl language.
What's your opinion?

Well if she doesn't want you to use fowl language, you definitely shouldn't say chicken sh•t.

it's a bad word to say if you have someone pointing a loaded gun at you. otherwise, no. it's fine.

It isn't, but one could argue that it is since it's a replacement for what you really want to say. It's an interesting thing to think about.
I'm curious if your DD suggested anything as a replacement.

No, not bad by me.
Sometimes I say "fluff" as in "No fluffing way"! I don't think it's a bad word either, even if it is to replace the other word.
Shoot is not the S word
Fluff is not the F word

Well, you know that Jeepers Creepers is a euphemism for JC. And "Sheesh" may come from that too.
Then there's Holy Moley which certainly has some Xian origin.
I am personally offended by "freaking".
Why don't you try "Oh Shrek!" or "Oy Vey!"?

I see what you DD says. When someone says shoot , in my head I think :sh*t. When I or someone else uses "no fluffing way" in my head I hear the other F word so...I guess there's something to what she says.
Either way though, my is your DD telling you what to say or not to say? that's probably worse than using shoot or even sh*t.

Am I the only one who detects a whiff of passive-aggressiveness when someone is a little too bothered by borderline "bad" words?
Yeah, I get it. Some things just sound worse than others, and a lot of things have an etymology associated with other religions. But that's true for all kinds of words we use on a daily basis -- such as "a capella" or "noon" -- not just exclamations of anger or frustration.
Let's just say I'm not so impressed by the piety of people who track down the origins of every mild exclamation yet still use CallingPost to announce that their DD is engaged.

She wasn't being disrespectful about.
She nicely asked if I could be more careful
I say it like oh no, it didn't even cross my mind that I'm thinking the sh word.
Is she being overly machmir, or does she have a point.

Reminds me of some sheltered, eidel chassidish men I hear on the Monsey bus - who always say "Fuch!" when expressing their annoyance.
I always cringe. But being that I only hear them talking on the bus and don't know them, I don't quite relish walking up to them and informing them of its origin....

Quote: | "a capella" or "noon" |
I assume the former has some connection to church choirs.
But what is the origin of the latter?

Personally I've never made the connection until this thread and have seen it as a completely separate word (unlike "shreck" which I think is awful.)
HOWEVER - 2 things to think about:
1. My dear grandmother a"h used to sing a song that went "it's not what you say, it's the way that you say it" meaning that your tone of voice is sometimes even more important than the actual words. So said aggressively, anything can be a bad word
2. If someone politely asks you to stop saying a word which they consider to be a bad word, then the correct thing to do is to realize that FOR THEM it is a bad word and you should try not to say it in their presence.
(just my VHO).
