it was carpeted, and I managed to catch him before he got to the bottom.
He cried for 2 minutes, got a scratch on his chin, but otherwise seemed fine.
I put him in for his usual nap around a half hour later.
he is now sleeping for 2 hours already.
should I wake him? take him to the dr just in case?
Im so nervous.

Call your doctor. I wouldn't wait to see what people on a message board say.

He should be fine though.

for sure wake him ... you need to make sure his eyes are not dilated ... and he is his normal self ... take it from there ... did he vomit - that would be a bad sign ...

I agree with all the advice above, but just wanted to add that...
while OF COURSE in such a situation one should take all the precautions mentioned...
he's probably ok!
(How's he doing now?)

All my kids have fallen down stairs at one time or another, sometimes just 6 or 7, and sometimes a whole flight. They're very resilient.
One good piece of advice I once received, was that even though, as mothers, our impulse is to run and pick them up and cuddle them, we should really let them pick themselves up, and walk to us. No, not some wierd psychological theory, but if Chas VeShalom they have sustained a brain or spinal chord injury, we should not be moving them, as that could make things worse. If they can pick themselve up and walk, you know they're intact neurologically. If, Chalila, they can't, then you know you need to get serious help quickly.
Anon so you don't call social services that my kids *fall* so readily!!!!

My ds rolled down the stairs at my inlaws, but bh they have extremely thick carpetting on their stairs. Needless to say it was horrifying and devestating (a lot worse for me than him). Check on him every half hour. Make sure no vomitting, dialted eyes, and make sure he's acting normally.
In NY they'll keep you in the hosp for 20 min. for observation and send you home that you should keep an eye out.

You don't need to wake a kid every 30 minutes for 12 hours. Where did someone get that idea? Can you imagine what torture that would be for a kid - all night, woken every 30 minutes?

I didn't mean for 12 hrs. but if the kid fell down the stairs and minutes later he went in for a nap, you should wake him up after a half hour to see how he's doing...and maybe to be neurotic like me you can do it 30 min. later again

ok, it happened again.
this time it was the outside steps, and he got a big ugly bump on his head.
dh was watching him, and he doesnt think we need to call anyone.
baby is doing fine, he hardly cries if he hurts himself, he is his usual cheerful self.
I am just consumed with worry. its a scary looking bruise and bump, but thats what tthey look like, right??
