Sadly a 4 year old passed away in my community after an unsuccessful operation for a heart condition he was born with Sad

I'm so nervous to go to the shiva, I've never encountered such a tragic situation like this before.

Any ideas how to approach it? I see his mother on a weekly basis and our kids are in the same daycare (she has another younger one).

Also, what can I do for them in the long run?

I went to a shiva recently of a 1/2 yr old baby who passed away. The mother was sitting there strengthening everyone else's emunah. It was amazing.
Just let the parents take the lead. You don't have to say anything.
They will speak. They will probably have photos. If you have any sweet memories to tell them about their child you can tell them.

Such sad news.
Go to the Shiva and follow the mother's lead.
And then call or visit afterwards. Mention the child by name. If you have a sweet memory, be sure to share. People want to feel that their child has not been forgotten.
