Whirlwind

On the hill where the buildings are towering tall
And the wind tunnels through with a moan in its call
A funnel arose on this drizzly hour
And sent wet leaves swirling in front of the tower.

And hats, coats, umbrellas; all common defenses
Were threatened as if the wind scorned such pretenses.
The trees' bursts of color ripped wetly away
Their past efforts pointless, dissolved in a day.

And I thought of you, lonely and sad in your bed
Facing winds inside and outside your head
Wondering if all you had built up seemed whisked
Right out of your hands, no more left to be risked.

It happens, that cold dissolution of dreams;
The sense that our future is ripped at the seams.
Yet winds move away, and the trees still remain
And hope does reblossom, in spite of the pain.

As you sigh like the winds, and find courage distilled
To pull out of the covers and grimly rebuild
Know that no matter what whirlwinds attack
You already own what you need to push back.

And while dreams get replaced, as you once again start,
Your foundation stands firm in the depths of your heart.
The call still resounds from within, from above:
You can go, you can grow, there's no end to our love.
