Help me translate.
How would you say ...וואס טוט זיך מיט, as in what's the status of the thing you were supposed to take care of? Somehow, "what's the status" sounds too formal/clumsy.

It's an informal phrase, so the English equivalent would be "What's up with...?"
If you want a more formal phraseology, go with any of the above suggestions.

Although I speak/understand Yiddish, I don't converse in Yiddish and never have. Yet, I still use 'what's doing with your left foot' / 'what's up with your son's headaches'.
It might not be good enough for written English, but for the spoken language it's just fine.
