We have to give my just turned 3 year old an upsherin on Tuesday! I'm praying he looks half normal by the time we are done!

ETA: watch out for his peyos if he has them. It's very easy to cut them off by mistake with a machine (from experience with my brothers disasters at the barber)

Really really long straight hair. I can't figure out what to cut off with the scissors and when to use the machine.

If it's your first time, use a #5 to start.
It's easy. Just watch below how to run the machine over the hair.
You don't have to use different #s, no need for blending like they show you.
Jewish style of using one number is even easier.

I paid for this ($10) and was worth every penny:
https://www.quarantinebarber.com/
He teaches you how to give a Jewish boys haircut and is very clear .

Is the Wahl haircutting machine, which this course recommends, permissible for use (according to halacha - razor touching head, etc.)?
Or is there another machine Jews get?

They're all permitted! Are you shaving his head, chassidish style or using a comb?
If you're using a comb #4 or 5, you definitely don't have a problem!
According to what I heard as long as it's not shorter than a #2 it's fine.
I have a Oster. They are more powerful and last longer! Depends on how many boys you have! Wink
Eta: for payos, visualize a triangle going from back of ear to temple, that's the area you want longer!

Just run over it with the machine. Make sure it's not a short number.

so like the same no as rest if the hair?
if the machine is set on a certain number, does that mean however much I go over his head it will not go shorter then that?
and also can the silver blade thing part cut the head? like if I press too deep?
thanks so much.

As long as the comb is clipped on the machine, it can't get shorter! Make sure it's well attached and doesn't fall off. For the front if you like it longer, take a comb/clip 2 numbers above the one used for the rest!(like #6 if you used a #4 !)

You can't press too deep, the # piece doesn't allow it to happen. It will be good. Since it's the first time and you were aiming for a #4, go with a #5. It'll be good!

Don't cut without the piece on it. (#4 or whatever)

It's not hard. If you want, start in the back so you can see what it looks like.

When you're done, you'll have to sort of trim the back edges.

hi everyone
so we did his hair!

Omg it was exhausting!! its better then it was I think, but a real mess!!
haha there are patches at the back and the sideburns are wrong and theres just uneveness all around. its funny.

like my husband said after he disappeared to his room when he saw how stressed I was getting 'if you would get that haircut in a barber shop, you would march straight back in, to demand your money back!"
and my son has major sensory issues so there was loads of tears, and rubbing and 'spitting out the hair' was crazy!

and to the mom who said you cant cut too deep yes you can! cos the back was on no4 and I just kept going and there r patches!
hes wearing a cap now neway.

but he did start to get mad that 'everyone wants to see my hair!" when I showed it to my naighbour and sending pictures out.
