I came across this method for figuring out your bra size years ago, and it is both effective and comfortable.
First, measure the circumference your ribcage under your breasts.
Ex: 36 inches
--This will be the number part of your bra size
Next, lean forward all the way (if you choose, you can do this while wearing a loose t shirt, but don't wear a bra), and measure the circumference of your breasts at the widest point.
Ex: 44 inches
Now, to determine your cup size:
Subtract your ribcage measurement from your breast measurement
Ex: 44 - 36 = 8.
Look up the size chart of the bra company you want to buy from, and see what's their 8th level cup.
Ex: "FancyShmancy Co." sizing chart runs like this
A B C D DD DDD E EE F FF G
The 8th option is a EE, so you wear a 36EE in FancyShmancy bras.
However, "Everyday Lady Co."s sizing chart looks like this
A B BB C D DD DDD E EE F FF G
The 8th size there is E, so if you're wearing an Everyday Lady bra, you'll need a 36E

There are other factors which affect the shape, feel and sit of a bra, including gore (how much space there is in the middle), strap placement, strap width etc. But now you can check your size for any company, and be a more informed customer.
I hope this helps someone! Chag sameach!
