Way back when I was in school, we had sewing as part of "home economics".

I learned the basic sewing tricks and tips but never mastered sewing on a machine.

I'd like to practice and hopefully learn to sew a straight line to successfully do mending and basic seams when needed.

I don't want to invest in an expensive machine but don't want junk either.

What budget do I need to consider that I'll need to spend on a decent machine that is good for a beginner?

Knowing my personality, I won't end up sewing clothes and intricate costumes, so the machine needs only basic stitches and features.

Any suggestions/ideas?

Thanks everyone for your input.

I just spent about €120 on a brother sewing machine for my daughter. It was the cheapest one available with a decent brand. It was actually very hard to find one because it seems lots of people have taken up sewing lately. They had lots of the more expensive ones in stock but none at that price point. None on amazon for that price but I ordered one from a local shop.

The difference between the cheaper and more expensive brother machines (or singer) is that they just do more complicated stitches.

Start with a simple Brother machine. They are not junk.

I bought a Singer machine for around 100$ on Amazon.
I use it for small jobs and love it!
Very user friendly and efficient.
This is the one I have. https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod.....aa722

I guess prices went up substantially, because the one you linked is priced at $279!

Any other suggestions or specific models I should look for?

Sewing machines are really selling now because in some places, people are staying home and need a hobby.
My Janome was about $279 a few years ago and has a variety of speed settings as well as push button start so that kids who can't reach a foot pedal can sew.
My granddaughter, age 3.5 years, made herself a swim bag all by herself, while I watched. Her 5 year old sister also made one but wasn't as interested as the little one. Putting it on the lowest speed helped these little girls control the machine.
