I never made it because it looks like something that would only taste good two weeks out of the year where I live, but if I lived in Cali and the produce was at it's finest I would go for it. It looks really good, and you are relying on the flavor of the tomatoes and watermelon than on the ancillary ingredients.

I have never made or tasted it, but I agree that it sounds kind of weird.
I think she has another heirloom tomato recipe in one of her books.

I don't know if it applies to tomatoes, but I understand heirloom squashes are for display, not to be eaten.

I think "heirloom" just means that the seed type is old or that it is particular to one family of growers. There can be an "heirloom" type of lots of things.

I tried it once, but wasn't crazy about it. The tomatoes tasted great, but the watermelon with the balsamic vinegar tasted a bit strange. I do generally like gourmet food.
