Artificial sweeteners have one advantage over sugar (aside from the main one): in their pure form, they are much stronger than sugar, and therefore, they can be produced in the form of a really tiny tablet. These are available, but they are much less popular than packets. But packets take up so much more space and have a small amount of sugar in them.

In the Uk, most of them aren’t kosher so that’s one reason for me! But yes the ones which are, I use, but only in coffee. Sweetener for cooking I always use the powder- it melts quicker and has a better taste (compared to the kosher tablets)

For cooking, the best sweeteners are the ones that measure 1:1 like sugar.

Why is their aftertaste different from packets? (I haven't found that to be the case with the ones I've bought, though most of them aren't kosher in the US either, so the one I bought I think might a limited version that's sold for Pesach.)

Just as an FYI, artificial sweeteners are carcinogens - it's more and more in the news. Much better to use something like Stevia/Truvia.

Using something that tastes bad defeats the purpose.

Just so you know, just because something is “natural” doesn’t make it healthy. The plant Stevia is made from is used for birth control by the people who are indigenous to where it grows. Cancer was seen in lab rats when they regularly ate 100s of times their body weight for a significant portion of their lives.

I’m not saying artificial sweetener is heathy or even healthy than Stevia but don’t be so quick with your preconceived notions.

Her point was that just because there's a link in mice doesn't prove that it exists in humans. There are so many potential carcinogens that it's very hard to generate good data.

I saw a "prop 65 warning" on a tire guage.

Lots of research shows sugar is better than alternatives. So I have sugar.

Tablets (of Sucralose, which is the sweetener that I use) are less sweet than the powder for some reason and have a slightly bitter aftertaste.
And the powder is more versatile.

I haven't heard that classic expression in years!
OP, the size of a sweetener isn't important.
I quit them years ago. No sugar in coffee or tea.

Studies show* that the size of a sweetener is one of the main determinants of whether or not it can fit in a given space, such as a purse or a cabinet.

*They don't, but they would if there were any.

The tablets are the older those of sweetener and most people don’t find them as tasty as the more modern ones.

I don’t really like any artificial sweeteners and have trained my taste to prefer unsweetened tea and coffee. Especially with tea, there are so many delicious varieties that sweetener isn’t necessary.

Studies have shown that people who use artificial sweetener don’t have better weight loss so it really is healthier to just eat smaller amounts of any sweetened food.

Why is there any difference at all between the same thing in powder form and solid form?
