If OP is talking about toiletries and personal care products, it can be ok to check ingredients. Blumenkrantz has a list of problematic alcohols and how they might be written that can be helpful.

Maybe op means kitniyos foods which are often hard to tell if it's OK even with the klp hechsher.

There are also different names for derivatives, like malt is a derivative of barley. Malt is also in ingredients like maltodextrose or maltodextrine,
