Anyone know what the name Ella means? Or is it a name from Tanach or just random?
And if I give the name any cute nicknames that could work?

I believe it can be a Yiddish name, the meaning of which I do not know.
In biblical Hebrew, I believe it is a name of a type of tree but in modern Hebrew it can also mean goddess, so not so appropriate for a religious Jewish girl.

This is a grandmother who was Ella. Only naming after if we understand what name means.

Ayla is a type of tree referenced in TaNaCH. Ella would be defined as ‘rather’ or ‘except.’ It’s not a person’s name in TaNaCH.

Ella is already a short and cute name, so why the need for a nickname?
Not so funny story: I have a cousin who named her daughter Ella because she liked the name. Our grandmother was extremely upset because she associated the name Ella with an abusive kapo in Auschwitz. The family had no idea and the baby had already been named. B"H our grandmother was eventually able to calm down and call the adorable baby by her name and now hopefully has a much better association with the name.

Ella is a German Yiddish name. Why would you punish your grandmother by not naming after her if she had a Yiddish instead of a Biblical name? I could see if it was one of those old fashioned hard to pronounce names that you wouldn’t want to saddle a child with, but this one’s pretty and not a name anyone would mispronounce or make fun of. I also don’t see why a simple four letter name with two short syllables needs a nickname. Yerachmiel Zecharia Leibush needs a nickname. Ella doesn’t. Just my two cents.

Thanks everybody for replying. In other words Ella has no meaning whatsoever.
I will not name my baby a meaningless name.

But even a bunch of Yiddish names have a meaning behind it. This sounds meaningless.
And I'm not punishing anyone as far as I know shes dead. If anything I would give the name to keep the connection....

Some sources say the name comes from an old German word alia, meaning "all," or alja meaning "other," while others point to modern Hebrew, where Ella means "goddess," and also "terebinth tree." And Ella is a Spanish personal pronoun meaning "she" and "her." Ella is most commonly pronounced "el-luh."

It is a kind of tree in tanach.
It’s also often a form of Elka in Yiddish.
Some use it as feminine of Eli (eliyahu)

Hebrew name Ella has nothing to do with the Spanish word Ella for she, which is pronounced Eyah
