Why does my scale do this

I weigh myself every morning
I use a basic digital bathroom scale, no fancy features.
Every time I step on the scale it gives me one number. Then I step off for a few seconds and go back and the number is about a lb less, give or take. Nothing changed. What's going on and which reading is accurate?

When you turn it on do you first wait for it to go to zero?
