Why buy vs make? The best gift I ever got was when my young kids tried to make me a birthday cake. They took their cookies from their snacks for school, crushed them up, and mixed them with water in a plastic bowl. Then they realized they can't use the oven, so they put it in the freezer to get hard. They gave it to me with pictures they drew and threw torn up construction paper at me for confetti.

Now that they are older, I would still value something from each that they made or wrote, by hand or computer. People worry about things being good enough once they get to a certain age. It stops them from doing things like this. I wish it wouldn't.

Have you done the personalized stuff? I know my mom loves the mugs,pics, pillows with pictures. Last year we got her a digital photo book and we all sent in pictures of us and the kids. She loved it.
