When I was about eight, we climbed a fairly steep hill, and my father told me that climbing Everest was just more of the same. He assured me that it wasn't difficult, and maybe we would do it when I was a teenager.

He lied.
Or maybe exaggerated.
Or was just being a father!
We never even climbed Ben Nevis.

OP, I’m in awe of your honesty. Most people don’t openly admit to their mistakes and to do that publicly!! Ok, you’re anonymous but Yael can figure it out. That’s one thing I’d never admit to. Just writing those words on the internet would have me quake in fear of being identified and eventually harassed for generations.
Anyway, here’s my question. How do you sleep at night with such guilt?
