She is almost two.

She goes in her crib just fine at night. But for the last few nights, 2-3 minutes after she's put in, she starts crying hysterically. I'll come back and comfort her and she'll calm down and then the cycle repeats. I took her out at one point and lied with her in my bed and put her back in, and same. Eventually a couple of hours past her bedtime she fell asleep.

It wasn't a pain kind of cry, more like a scared of something kind of cry. But I can't figure out why.

Any advice? Thank you.

Try not taking her out of bed. You can be there to comfort her, but leave her in her bed. Otherwise, you're just setting yourself up for bedtime disaster.
If there isn't a night light or lamp in her room, consider getting one.

She has a night light. She also has her favorite doll in her crib.

I know I shouldn't have taken her out but nothing was helping...

My Two year old always cries at bedtime and nap time. He doesn’t want to stop playing and not be with me. I think this is normal

She used to go to sleep so nicely. I did her bedtime routine and left the room and I would hear her talking to herself happily for a bit and then she would fall asleep on her own. This is a sudden change so I thought there might be a specific issue. I guess it could just be a new stage. Thank you.

There is a two year regression so maybe that’s it?

Molars coming in? Ear infection? I’d rule out something bothering her when she lays down.

She's definitely working on her molars. I gave her Motrin at some point last night in case that was the issue. She did not sound like she was in pain though.

When she cries go to her right away. It’s a stage and it will pass.

Sometimes it’s more irritation than real pain. I’d give Motrin a half hour before bedtime see if it helps with the molars and gets rid of the issue.
