My son (8) began guitar lessons this year.
He enjoys the lessons and, per his guitar teacher, catches on well, faster than other students.
I try to help him practice by reviewing songs and chords with him, however, how do I know if he is getting better at it? Or if he knows what he’s doing?

I think as with anyone, they also need to have an affinity for it
One of my children began playing the piano at age 5, and played completely by ear with chords. He never had had lessons, but he’s very unusually musically gifted
Another one of my kids takes piano lessons and does fine but he never had the natural affinity for music like my more musical children
Everyone is different
