Yes and no. The book I found said research shows kids pick it up between 4-7. This child is 6 and is struggling but very bright and can be taught.

Oooh. For some reason I thought you were talking about a preschooler. This makes more sense now that I know it’s a 6 year old.

Amelia Bedelía is not sarcastic. Quite the opposite. She takes literally expressions that are idiomatic. Not sarcastic; idiomatic. (I happen to think the books are brilliant; native speakers don't even realize how much of their speech is idiomatic and open to misinterpretation by a nonnative speaker.
I question the value or wisdom of trying to teach a preschooler about sarcasm. A child's straight forwardness is half her charm. She will learn about sarcasm and other less than lovely forms of expression quite naturally as she gets older and is exposed to them.

Dr Seuss is satirical, not sarcastic; there's a difference. And, like many old-time TV cartoons, his satire is for the adults in the audience, not the children.

Are you an SLP? That’s who usually works on this, and they should have a lot of materials.

Yes I am. But I never worked specifically on this.

The Princess in Black books are hilarious. They are early reader chapter books.
