The tomato soup I grew up was flavored only with onions, salt and sugar. My grandmother made it with fresh tomatoes that she put through a food mill but I use canned tomatoes that I puree with a hand blender. Just with a ton of sauteed onions and sugar to taste. It's also great with rice cooked in it.

I sautee onions, add shredded cabbage, let it wilt, then add tomato juice, a bay leaf, salt, pepper, sugar, and let it cook. I also make nokerlach for this soup! eggs, flour, water, salt, drop in to bubbling soup. ( basically like dumplings)

Saute' onion and diced tomatoes. Add to that rice, salt, pepper, basil and oregano. Add tomato sauce and water. Bring soup to a boil. Cook on a low flame.
