Let's see if we can have fun with this!

I suggest we each take turns periodically making a contibution. A contribution can be a small tidbit, a small assignment, a small contemplation, whatever. It has to be small and focused, nothing overwhelming.

To start, here's an assignment.

Write your name (or screen name) in the Japanese alphabet of your choice.

off to figure out how to do this myself..

OK with help from google translation. entropy is accepted in Japanese as a foreign word, therefore it is written in the Katakana alphabet.

エントロピー

エ E
ン N
ト TO
ロ RO
ピ PI
ー makes the last syllable (Pi ピ) longer [/color]

The only challenging bit is that there is no "ch" (as chanukah) sound
and "v" is replaced by "b" in Japanese.

It was rather hillarious when they staged Fiddler on the Roof in Japan where
Teviye cries out "Chava" as (you guessed it) "Tchaba!"

I knew katana&sakana but tora&saba will be easy to remember now! thanks Smile

I got the Kanji translation for Chava via Wikipedua.
夏娃
looking up each Kanji separately I guess it means beautiful summer?

Kanji for Rachel:
拉结

So Hinda means deer! cool; I didn't know. Hinda has a Japanese ring to it (Maybe bc of Honda?) Maybe it has a Kanji?

Chava can you give the link? Because when I put it into the dict. (http://jisho.org/)拉 means crush or kidnap.

So I went and asked those on a Japanese email list, because I found several different versions of my name, what would be my name in Japanese.

Well apparently it would be written like this: レイチェル (reicheru)
Because, non-Japanese don't get Japanese names.
The names on the wiki site are apparently Chinese not Japanese. Go figure.

If I wanted to get a Japanese name I would apparently have to become a citizen of Japan, and then I'd have to ask if they accept the name and it would have to be vetted. Okay, I can get a Japanese name, but it isn't an official Japanese name, it is only a fun Japanese name, and I can make it up based on the meaning of my name or on words that have the same sounds as the sounds above.

There were quite a few based on sound. I definitely don't want to be
癩散 which means leporsy scatter...ugh.
but
賚生 "gift of life" isn't so bad.

Anyway, this brief intro to Japanese names is courtsey of nihongo101@yahoogroups.com.

So you all can make up your names as well.

"gift of life" is a great one!

I'm now tempted to join nihongo101.. Can't afford to expand my internet addiction though.

Let's count!

I found this on about.com
