Willow, maybe those parents didn't know they were all that bad, or maybe they had a rebelious streak and did it just because? What I feel bad for those kids.
I know someone named Milka. and I know some other uncommon names although I don't think they're biblical such as Oshrat and Shachar Shem Tov. I also know someone named Rivital. very unique, especially in the US and they won't have to worry about being confused in a classroom with three or four other children with the same name. Wink

It is one of Shlomo's other names. Definitely Biblical. And not uncommon though not as popular as moshe-dovid- shmuel-avrohom-menachem mendel.

I've been wondering though- about the shvatim- how come people will name their children most of the shvatims names and not others. Why are some more common? They were all Tzaddikim!

I asked my rav once why some perfectly good people in tanach did not become popular for names. my rov said "even a name has to have mazal".

I have personally known at least one person named for each shevet. I can see avoiding Gad in English-speaking countries, as it sounds like G-d. even if you pronounce it Gaaaaaaad, very flat A, it still sounds like an exclamation. (Egads, gadzooks.)

I know of a man named yaakov who had close to (if not exactly) 12 sons named after the shevatim and they have 1 daughter named dina!
(I know they for sure have a gad)
I met a kid yesterday named nachshon.
(this isn't from tanach) but I know someone who named their son Mertzag - it stands for Medinas Yisrael Reishes Tzimichas Geulasanu.

I thought of an answer to my own q while I was teaching hebrew school. Could it be because those shvatim came from Bilha and Zilpa?

But Naftali and Asher are not uncommon, whereas I've never heard of a Zevulun.

Adam??
In school I had about 7 Adams in my year, and many of my friends had a brother called Adam.

Someone mentioned the name Dan (as in shevet Dan) - it's always been one of my favourite names.

Maybe it's just where I live though, many of the Adams I knew were frum.
I was told it's more popular in England than the US though ...

seems practically non-existent in the chareidi world

did those 7 Adams pronounce it like in the Chumash?

why do you say that?

"Noach" is quite uncommon (yes, I know there are R' Noach Weinberg and R' Noach Orloweck) and when it's spelled that way, it looks like it rhymes with "coach"!

I know a Yedida - it's a Nach name.
