We'll be in Israel next week P-G, but I have no idea what kind of clothing to pack.
(I know.. I checked temperatures on websites but I cannot connect temp to clothes).
We'll be splitting time equally between Herzlia and J'lem.
Is it pretty much long-sleeve winter-ish weather or are people wearing short-sleeves
(for kids, not me)? Any rain?

It was pouring and pouring and hailing and thundering etc... all yesterday, and continues to be icky out this morning. Icky is good for israel, but bad for traveling.
Long sleeves definitely.
Most places in israel dont have adequate heating.
I've been wearing mostly sweaters or long sleeve shirts indoors, and going outside you generally need somewhere between a jacket and a heavy winter coat, depending on the day.

While what Seraph describes is the present situation (though it was already much nicer today) a few days ago it was still summer weather and who knows what will be when you come in a week. I would suggest layers, so you can go both ways.

Even in the "summer weather" of a few days ago, nights are still pretty cold and you definitely need a jacket.
Even with the summer weather, people were still in long sleeves.

Seraph, It depends where. At night in Jerusalem yes, you'll need a light weight coat or vest. But op also said she's going to hertzlia, there you probably wouldnt need one. And during the day, if one is in the sun, it really was very warm (I for one regretted the long sleeves and kept rolling them up).

a light sweater during the day has been fine for the last month or so, but need something heavier at night, once it gets dark, the temp drops very quickly

Thanks very much ladies. I guess I have to be a pack rat and put everything--short sleeves, long sleeves, sweaters, coats... We are soooo excited.

One thing to remember - if you are outside hotels, people's homes are usually much colder than people's homes in England. So make sure you have warm indoor clothing - not just warm coats.
Ditto warm nightwear. (Hotels are probably well heated.)
