Answer to original puzzle:
The wine glass puzzle has the answer on page 3 or 4. Haven't figured out the answer to the hat puzzle yet.

For the black and white hat trick my answer is that whoever comes into the room goes into the line exactly by the split of black and white hats so whichever one he is, he is near the ones wit he same and so on.
I.e. Bbbbbbnwwwwww
N= new entrant
If n is white he is near the whites and the next entrant will see the division that way and if n is black he is near he black....
