at what age to most ppl start solids? are there any benefits to keeping babies exclusively bf for longer?

According to our pediatrician:
If the child seems satisfied and is gaining nicely, it's okay to push off starting solids until 6-7 months. However, if a child is underweight it may be necessary to start with solids earlier. With my dd, we started her on solids at 5 months old because she wasnt putting on any weight. (It didnt even help. She's still underweight. But thats another issue.)
