Hi. We need to name after a Yaakov and/or a Yisroel. I did some research and came up with the following gedolim options:
Yaakov Yisroel (the Steipler)
Yaakov Chaim (the Kaf Hachaim)
Yisroel Meir (Chofetz Chaim)
Avraham Yaakov (Rav Pam)
Yisroel Yaakov (dayan fisher and the baranovicher Mashgiach)
Yichiel Yaakov (the sridei Aish)
Yaakov Yosef (Herman- of "All for the Boss")
Yaakov Dovid (Authoer of the Ridvaz)
Yaakov Yihoshua (Author of the Pnei Yihoshua)
Yaakov Tzvi (Author of the Ksav V'kaballah)
Any opinions or perspectives?

The Kaf Hachaim was a sefardi Posek. We're not sefardi but DH is open to any big talmidei chachamim.
btw, anon b/c we still have a few weeks to go before this becomes a l'maisadika question!

thats my baby's name, named for his great-grandfather, who was not an ordinary person either.
we call him Yankele, and most people do a double-take when they ask us his name.

Yaakov Yosef was also a great student of the Ba'al Shem Tov.

thats so interesting. youre the 3rd person I met whose grandfather's name was Yaakov Yosef, and none of us are related, and we are all shocked to hear of another Yaakov Yosef!
(sorry, blumag, I dont think so, I have no relatives named bluma. )

ill admit that I havent.
but the reason why its funny to hear of another Yaakov Yosef, is because they all happen to be grandfathers, and also pretty recent.
and another thing is that all 3 are within the Lubavitch world, which can be pretty small when it comes to naming after relatives.
in fact, by my Yankele's bris, my friend was there with her son who is also a Yaakov Yosef. all my relatives (a bunch of old ladies ) were shocked to find out that he wasnt related!

I work with sefardim and I've heard a few Yaakov Yisroel's. I think they go nice together. Also, I have an Avraham Yaakov in my class.
Btw, by b'davka yaakov and yisroel? because you already have an avraham and yitzchoK???

Do you have a specific connection to any of the Gedolim mentioned above, or a connection through a midda, or something especially meaningful you have learned from them? I'd think THAT would be a reason to choose one name over the other.

OP here. Chen, as far as I remember, RJJ was begun by Rav Yaakov Yosef Herman (as per "All for the Boss" - a MUST READ!). Who knows, maybe HE was named after R'Yaakov Yosef of Vilna..........
Queen, interesting question. The prob is, even if I do "connect" to one name on a nafshi level more than another, I still have to LIKE the name to actually give it to the kid. I do taka like the name Yaakov Yosef and I have a kesher with Rebbetzin Shain- his daughter and author of "All for the Boss" So its definitely a thought...............
MY DH likes Avraham Yaakov but I think thats just because Rav Pam went to the dentist where his bubby was the office manager
Btw, haven't even HAD the baby yet! Just theorizing.........
