Hop613, how did you know that they didn't understand? And what signs of trouble were there later on?

We would ask simple questions about the text, to check whether a student knew what was going on.
The problem is that some students will get into the habit of only focusing on decoding, and not paying attention to what is actually going on in the book. This isn't such a problem in the early years, but in the older grades when the ficus shifts from learning to read, to reading to learn, these students don't have the habits of monitoring their comprehension. So they may read a passage from the social studies book flawlessly, but have no clue what the passage was actually about.
All that being said, I don't think it is so horrible for students to read books above their level, as long as someone is monitoring to make sure they are practicing comprehension on grade appropriate texts. That's where the teacher usually comes in, which may be why the teacher feels so strongly about this issue.
