I like this solution the best. My 10 yo uses DH's ipad for playing games, but we make her use it in the living room where we can all see what she's doing. We also keep an eye on the history to make sure that her searches are appropriate.
For an older kid who is naturally more curious, my gut reaction is HECK NO! - and then I have to start thinking about it a bit harder. With the right protection and guidance, there must be some sort of way to compromise.
Ugh. This parenting stuff is HARD.
