Yesterday my 13-month-old's fever spiked at over 104.
I gave her children's motrin and plonked her in the tub and the fever went down.
Are there any other methods to use when baby's burning up or did I do the two tried and true?

You did the best thing. Just keep the Advil going and alternate it every 3 hr. with Tylenol. And call the doc. It might be an ear infection, strep, something viral.

Wet cotton balls in cold water and put under armpits. Also, coldish shower. Light clothing. Excessive blankets and coats makes the fever go up(my grandmother taught me this, not medical advice)

NOT cold, but room temp. That will already be much lower than the body temp. If you use cold water you can put the body into shock.
That being said, a fever can be beneficial to the body. It helps to fight the infection. Give meds if the baby is really a shmatta but if he is just sleepy or otherwise content let them be. 104 is high and I would call the pediatrician but if the fever is 101 or 102 then leave it alone.
