I disliked it in HS when I had to read it for the bagrut but I enjoyed it when I reread it last summer. This time I appreciated the depiction of early mandate-era Jerusalem as well as the juxtaposed characterizations of old age through the personas of Tehilla and the Rabbanit. I don't think this is a story that young people can really relate to. The fact that most of us who read it did so in HS probably accounts for its unpopularity.
Still - I can't say it's my favorite work by Agnon by a longshot.

I didn't hate it; it was just too drawn out for an Ivrit class in America. I loved when we learned Israeli songs for Ivrit class. My kids can't believe that these fun songs were my school work and tests.
