I'm a 'stepchild'. Ask me anything (almost)

My mom was a stepchild who still has a great relationship with her stepmom even though her father was nifter a few years ago. But she grew up without a mom from an early age, her father brought them up himself with the help of his mother and sisters, and then only remarried after all his children were settled. I was 5 when my Grandfather and Step Grandmother got married, and remember it well, but she is the only Grandma I had so was special to me and treated us like real grandchildren, we went to stay with them when we were little, do all the usual family stuff together etc.

My mom said it was easy for her to accept her new stepmom, as it was an adult relationship and there was no one to replace as she didn't remember her real mom. But it was a unique situation, in a way she never had a new mother figure, just a new friend who stopped her having to worry about her father so much. The ones who really benefited were the grandchildren, as we got a proper grandmother in our lives which we would have missed out on otherwise.
