Haha. Every month I tell my husband that I'm extra makpid not to do laundry the entire week of Rosh Chodesh. I'm also makpid on Rosh Chodesh not to be in the same room as any dirty laundry.

Not a chumra, DH is supposed to do the laundry instead, as this is a yom tov for the women.

For those who would like a basic source. Kitzur SA 97:3. It says women have a minhag not to do melacha.
Of course AYLOR. But that is the source.

Definitely no carpool on RC either.
Don't know if it is anyone's chumra yet, but a minhag starting with me.

I like where this thread is going!
How about no white shirts for the boys either? I take it as some sort of punishment that they wear white shirts to yeshiva and come home sooooo dirty that it takes forever to get the stains out of it. How did that minhag start?
Talk about a break from laundry.

White shirts start to make it easier for the Rebbeyim to check the boys to make sure they are wearing tzitzis. All they have to do is throw water on them and the shirts are see though enough to tell. You open up the hose and can check the whole class at once. If you have colored shirts, each boy would have to untucked his shirt and be checked individually, with a shomer, to ensure that there was no impropriety.
Remember, it is always about what is best for the Rabbit (autocorrect of Rabbis but had to leave). The work it generates give you extra schar, so tell your sons they if they really love you, that they will use their shirts instead of napkins.

Thanks. I was running a load as I read this because I forgot about some people not doing washes. But then I read this:
Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt”l writes that nowadays, women may wash clothing in a washing machine, since it is a simple task.

What I can't figure out is why a supposed reward for women ends up being another source of drudgery and inconvenience.

I don't abstain from laundry on Rosh Chodesh, anymore than I abstain from any other necessary tasks for the day.
In times past laundry was a hard days work, but these days it is not the arduous task it once was.

There's no reason to mock or belittle. Obviously laundry is not the onerous task it once was, but during, say, the middle ages having a day off from sewing and washing clothes was special for women.

I don't get the 'husband switching on the machine.'
So the woman sorts the laundry and puts it in the machine and her husband presses a button.
I would have thought that pressing the button was less work than sorting.
Am I missing something?

I think in that case it is symbolic only. But yeah. I agree the husband should be doing laundry full out if the wife has the minhag and she is told to keep to it.

Before wash machines, woman did not do laundry on rosh chodesh as it was hard work. Nowadays, we all bh have wash machines that does the laundry for us.
After the war there was confusion. So some people stayed with some customs that would not become minhag had there been more clarity at that time.
