Last week I tried the jelly/ketchup sauce on homemade meatballs. It was delicious! But my husband's sugar went over 200 for a whole day. Any ideas that aren't so sugary other than tomato sauce? I would like to start buying meatballs rather than making them and I'll have to disguise them in a sauce. My kids are spoiled with homemade everything and really notice the difference but I want quick options when I go back to work.

I just make a sauce from fried onions and garlic, canned chopped tomatoes, tomato puree and add water and spices. I dont add any sugar. Comes out yummy and is easy to make. I dont have a recipe, I just judge with my eye but I'm sure you can find something like that online.

I use tomato sauce and jellied cranberry sauce with a bit of lemon juice.

I make some with mushrooms, red wine, stock and herbs and let it reduce. It's really good

Can I ask for your jelly ketchup sauce recipe? I might want to give it a try...

I think its about a quarter cup grape jelly heated with a cup of ketchup or bbq sauce. When I was growing up my mom stayed home until I was about 12 years old. She never cooked with processed foods, everything was very plain real foods, boring and healthy. I didn't even eat mayo or jarred pasta sauce as a child. Now that I'm a busy mom I'm still learning about these things but I think its a fairly common mainstream American thing.
