My baby started to crawl and climb - I need a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs so he doesn't go up, but also at the top of the stairs so that when he is upstairs he won't fall down.

Nobody I know has two gates, so I'm wondering if this even makes sense....

Of course it makes sense. Do you want to have to move the gate every time you take the baby up or down the stairs? Why wouldn’t people have two gates, assuming they could afford more than one. To me having two is just common sense and intelligence.

I have 3 baby gates... 2 for the upstairs staircase and 1 for entrance staircase.

We have one at the bottom of the stairs so she can wander freely around on the first floor. Upstairs she can't wander around unsupervised. It would be nice if I had another one at the top of the stairs, but they are very annoying to open/close all the time, they are expensive, and they make more holes in my walls, so this is the compromise.

Upstairs is not always necessary since it’s not where most people spend a lot of their waking hours and you can always close a bedroom door to contain the baby.

We have two.

My mother only had 1. I recently asked her about it and she said whenever she was upstairs she always made sure the room she and baby were in had the door closed.

I only put one upstairs at the top after my then 16 month old fell down and lost a tooth 😰

It's not possible with my stairs so I teach my babies how to scoot down even before they crawl or walk.

I used to have the same approach. Let them learn and then I don’t need an annoying gate. My baby (16 mo) was holding things and trying to go down at the same time and he fell.

My approach now is better safe than sorry.

Until they know how to walk down steadily by using the banister (around age 20-24mo) the gate is closed.

It's literally not possible by me to have a gate. My children slide down on their stomachs feet first. My kids crawl and walk pretty late so that's probably also a factor.
