I know people who did all different things.
For a kid Shlomo Dovid you’ll find some people use Solomon, some use David (bc Solomon is a little atypical), some use Shlomo, some use Shloimie, some use Steven. It’s really a preference and IMO no right if wrong
For us personally-
ODD- Hebrew and English are the same, and it’s relatively easy to pronounce (think Elisheva)
DS- his Hebrew name doesn’t really have an English version (think Baruch), so we chose a random English name we like that’s totally unrelated
YDD- goes by her last Hebrew name , but her English name is her first Hebrew name which translates directly into English. Like her name is Esther Leeba , she goes by Leeba, and her English name is Esther

I put full hebrew names on birth certificates and insurance etc. Much easier than having to remember which kid goes by what name legally
