And the chickens have to be handled properly or they won't be kosher for shechita when returned to us.

Are you saying that in all chicken farms, and all storage facilities before Shechita takes place, the chickens are stuffed into crates, in many many piles of crates one on top of the other, for days, without sufficient air circulation?

I hope not.

They are loaded into crates right before transport. There must be sufficient air circulation or the chickens will die. Dead chickens don't do anyone any good. As for being in the crates for days, They are probably there for a day and a half or so when used for kapporos. Otherwise less as they go to the plants for shechita that day.

The Kaporos places DO keep them over Shabbos, in crates as described.

Not our chickens! As my boss just told me friday "They wanted to take the chickens for 5 days. Thats ridiculous. They won't be any good by then.

Ok, maybe they sent chickens friday afternoon for kapporos last night, and they were returned this morning for shechita. So they were in the crates for 2 days maximum.

I don't know about other places and kapporos, but I do know how ours works.

Another question:

Is this man holding a live chicken or a dead chicken?

No way.
You hold one hand over their wing so it doesn't flap, place your other hand beneath your chicken to secure its legs, and hold it secure against your body.

Ok, you are right. I've only seen how they are held for shechita. Taken out of the crates, their wings carefully held together and then turned on their backs and held that way for the shochet.

Where? They are shechted on the spot at some places and later same day at others.

live. no blood. heads seem to be upright. if they were dead the heads would likely flop to the side.
