I’m applying online. Im doing it in my name bec I am the one with the account for Medicaid for my husband and kids so it’s just easier. I’m assuming that I can include them on the same application ? Also I’m up to part where it asks how many assets I have. Will I be disqualified if we have about 50k in savings and stocks etc? We currently both have no income (happened suddenly..working on it)

I believe you will be disqualified with those types of savings.

Yes I'm 99% sure for SNAP any savings make you ineligible.

It’s so confusing bec I see online that they no longer take assets into consideration. But then it asks for assets

why don't you speak to somebody who can help you with this?
If you're in Brooklyn, BPJCC assists with applications for free, they'll know more then us laymen.

As per NY snap website, assets/resources are generally NOT taken into account. Only current income.

They ask for a lot of stuff that don't necessarily affect eligibility. Also, if you have no assets/resources, they prioritize your application.

Different states have different eligibility requirements.

Everyone who is part of the household will be on the application.

Not in Brooklyn. Called one of the jccs near me but since I wasn’t in their county they couldn’t help me. I can’t find a jcc near me.

I'm sorry Sad

Maybe try calling them back and seeing if they have a different referral?

Thanks so much. I think I’ll do that. I’ll put in the assets amount and leave it up to Hashem.

Hi OP! I live in Lakewood. At one point I applied for snap and I had over 50k in savings. You need to give documentation for all your assets. If you have mutual funds or investments, they count it as monthly income. But you can get benefits!

Several years ago, having assets disqualified you from getting snap. I believe it was Obama who changed it.

If you have 50k in savings and stocks why can’t u use some of that money for food?
Snap is for people who don’t have enough money for food

There's a reason that assets are not considered for most benefits today. Allowing people to use their assets wisely helps them get off benefits faster than using the assets for basic living expenses, like food.
