I stressed from very young that we don't just walk in to Mommy and Tatty's room. Especiall since my room is also my office and I could be doing anything o;n my computer. It's not their business what's on my screen. But they just feel free to walk in. They start talking to me and walk right in and I instinctively answer them, then rewind with a wait, you're not allowed to come in here without permission. But by then I already answered them. They don't learn.

I can't. I need to be cognizant of what's going on in the house.

Yes we have a combo lock and you need to knock to come in. I let them in plenty but if the door is closed you knock. If its open you can walk in.

My kids still do this . Argh. I make them go out and try again. Every single time!

Reinforce, reinforce, reinforce.
Have conversations. Educate and explain. Have conversations. Reinforce.

I think its confusing for some kids like the door is open but I cant come in feels like a mixed signal. A closed door is an obvious boundary, an open one is confusing. So it may take a while.

A sign that they can see as they approach?

Do what I did - I mistakenly forgot to lock my door while getting undressed (just my shirt was off). My 10 year old son walked right in on me without knocking. He was so mortified, he ran away and hid in his bedroom. He will NEVER be walking into my room without knocking again

Lock your door.
Open door means it's ok to walk in.
Also teach by example. Knock on their door when it's closed.

Does that mean your door is open? My kids are very good about knocking but I only expect that when the door is closed I just don’t think it’s realistic otherwise.

There are more appropriate ways to be mechanech kids.

OP, if you can’t close your door, then you could try a sign, as someone else said. “Don’t forget to knock and wait” or something like that.

Do people typically lock the door?
My door is only ever locked while DTD.
I can’t fathom locking my door or having a combination code on the bedroom. We have one to get into the house, but inside? That seems so cold and distant.
Educate and communicate.

I've seen in people's houses where they have a line on the floor, and the children know they cannot pass that line. Can you put down a strip of red painter's tape or something?
